Cherokee Nation election 2011

Bill John Baker: Principal Chief

Bill John Baker, a Tahlequah businessman and longtime Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor, today announced he is a candidate for the office of Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.

“It has been a wonderful experience serving the Cherokee people as their Tribal Councilor all these years,” Baker said. “But I feel I can serve them even better as chief.”

Baker challenged the current Administration, “After 12 years of one man’s administration, we are stagnant,” he said. “We need new and creative ways and ideas of how to help our people and that will require new leadership.

Baker says he believes the Cherokees deserve a good education, good healthcare, good housing and decent wages. “I will always put the people and their needs first,” he said. “These are difficult times for our people and I want to do everything possible to remove all the roadblocks to their health, welfare and happiness.”

“I look forward to visiting with as many of our people as possible in the next few months to listen to your suggestions and concerns and to learn how we can better serve all the people of the great Cherokee Nation.”

Baker says his years on the council have been not only a job, but a joy to serve the Cherokee people.

“Working together, we can build a wonderful future for Cherokees everywhere,” he said. “With God’s help and your support, we can ensure that the best days are yet to come.”

The election will be held on June 25, 2011.

John William Cornsilk: Principal Chief

John William Cornsilk, is a Cherokee descendant of Cherokee Nation Citizens and member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma since its inception in 1976, by then Principal Chief Ross O Swimmer, has announced his candidacy for the office of Principal Chief of the CNO/Cherokee Nation.

Cornsilk, after retirement in 1997 has been battling what he sees as a dictatorship fraught with corruption, the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, via the World Wide Web and his computer. Cornsilk, ran for Deputy Principal Chief unsuccessfully in 2003. Having been labeled a malcontent, he continues the fires of discontentment for what he sees as maltreatment of his people as a Cherokee warrior for his people.

Cornsilk is challenging Chad Smith "who is finishing up 12 years of a one man rule, by control of the Council called Team Cherokee," he said. "We need a Council that only answers to the Cherokee People not the Chief, and a Chief that is in tune with his Cherokee People and their needs."

Cornsilk says Cherokee rights to an education, healthcare as long as the river flows and grass grows, livable shelter and jobs, for the Cherokee people and their basic needs will be number one, he said. "Today with the national economy at an all time low, hard times for Indian People are at an all time high, and hardship in the Cherokee communities is no different, my goal is to do everything possible to bring about what Chad Smith claims we are, a Happy Healthy People."
