Osiyo,

The Cherokee Independent Council Coalition (CICC) is about making the Cherokee People the number one priority in the Cherokee Nation government.

      The Cherokee Independent Council Coalition is a community group that wants to promote, and elect independent leadership to the Cherokee Nation Tribal Government in 2011 and beyond.  The Coalition believes that a slate of councilors whose campaign's are financed solely by any candidate for Principal Chief violates the checks and balances in our three branch government.

CICC promotes two fundamental principles:

1. The Cherokee Nation should not be bought by special interest groups through campaign donations to any one candidate;
2. The opportunity to lead should be well within every Cherokee citizen's reach regardless of material wealth.

The past eight years have shown that a slate run majority of the council is detrimental to the Cherokee People and their government.  It is time to empower the Cherokee People to elect leaders who can stand on their own; a councilor should only serve their constituents and no one else.

    "The election of a slate; financed directly from the Principal Chief’s campaign fund, violates at the very least the spirit and intent of the 'checks and balances' of our three branch government.  While in the American 2-party system you have a Party leader elected from within the party itself, then push their selected candidates; the ‘Team Cherokee’ model is controlled and is pushed solely by Chad Smith through his apportionment of his own personal campaign finances.  Loyalty is then 100% to the Chief as we have seen ‘Team Cherokee’ switch out team members when they no longer conform to Smith’s personal ideals; this happened in Districts 1 and District 3 in 2007.  All three branches of Government are then controlled by the Principal Chiefs Office either directly or indirectly when the Chief’s loyalists in the legislative council branch, affirm his selections to the Judicial Branch.  The ‘Team Cherokee’ model inherently best serves the Chief and his agenda, rather than the Chief and Tribal government, following the people’s agenda; CICC wants to turn this around.

The members of the CICC may not agree on everything, but we agree that the Cherokee People need to be the number one concern of the Cherokee Nation government."
